1. What is dismissal time on half days?
On half days, also called early dismissal days, students are dismissed at 1:00pm.  *Note: lunch is served on half days.  For the scheduled half days, aftercare is available.  If there is a scheduled early dismissal and delayed opening is announced, the early dismissal is cancelled.  Students will be dismissed at their normal time.  For an emergency early dismissal, usually weather related, parents will be notified by media and by phone, and will be asked to pick up their children. 
 

2. Is there before care on delayed opening days?
No.
 

3. How do I get started with scrip/contact person?

4. What is Honors Assembly?
Honors Assembly recognizes students in grades 4 through 8, for academic achievement along with good conduct.  This is a special assembly for students; parents are encouraged to attend.  It is held shortly after each report card is sent home. 
 

5. Are families required to participate and purchase items for fundraisers? 
No.  Fundraising helps keep school costs down, so families are encouraged to help disseminate fundraiser materials to their relatives, friends and co-workers if they feel comfortable doing so. 
 

6. What is “tag day”?
Each month, we have announced “tag days”, where students for a fee of $2/student or $5/family can participate in a non-uniform day.  We use the monies collected to support a local, national, or world-wide charity.   Non-uniform code must be followed on Tag Days and can be found in the Student Handbook.  Also note: if a student’s birthday falls on a school day they may wear non-uniform clothes that adhere to the Student Handbook.  If a student’s birthday falls on a weekend they can choose the Friday before or Monday after to wear non-uniform attire.
 

7. What are interims/why did/didn’t I receive one for my child?
Interims are progress reports that may be sent mid-quarter, as needed to parents of students achieving less than satisfactory grades (U’s, D’s or F’s).  Interims are also sent home for serious behavior problems.  A conference is recommended to correct problems identified on the interim report. Grades can and should be checked regularly by parents through their FACTS portal.
 

8. When do clubs start? Which grades are they open to?
There are several activities offered to students at appropriated grade levels during the year.  The activities vary year-to-year depending on the availability of volunteers.  Some examples from recent years are: Basketball, Cheerleading, Safety Patrol, Student Council, choir, drama etc. When club leaders are ready, a notice will be sent home in the weekly school bulleting with details, including which grades they are open to.
 

9. Where can I park during school hours?
It is recommended that you do not park in any of the parking spaces to the right of the church, closest to the cemetery.  This is particularly true when buses arrive and depart (7:30-8:00am and 2:30-3:00pm).  It is best to park in the center spaces to the right of the church, or in the spaces to the left of the church. 
 

10. What is the protocol for car arrival in the morning and car pick up in the afternoon?
Morning drop off begins at 7:35am.  Car riders arrive through the graveyard entrance off of St. John’s Road and proceed to the sidewalk near the school entrance.  School staff and Safety Patrol members will assist students exiting the vehicle. All students must be dropped off by 7:50am.
Afternoon pick-up begins at 3:04pm and is staggered until 3:15.  Families will enter through the gravel driveway off of Sandy Bottom Rd.  Cars will line up in rows on the far playground in their color groups that have been pre-assigned.  Families will be assigned to the blue, green, or red group.  This is done by the first letter of the family’s last name.  Families are to arrive at the posted time and once the buses leave the parking lot, the blue group will proceed to the sideway near the front of the school where SJS staff will assist students into their cars.
 

11. Who do I contact in an after-hours emergency?

12. In the event of an emergency dismissal will there be bus service?

Yes, we will have bus service in the event of an emergency.
 

13. Mandatory Volunteer Hours and Recording…
Studies have shown time and again that students are more successful when parents are actively involved in the school. When parents are involved, students receive a clear message that education is valued.  SJS requires 15 total volunteer hours per family and each family is assigned to a fundraiser.  There are numerous opportunities to volunteer throughout the year (e.g. field trips, in the classroom, fundraising activities, etc.…).  Families are asked to track their hours in “Track It Forward.”  There is a link to this on the SJS website.
 

14. How do I alert the school if there is a change in regular dismissal procedure for my child?  

Simply fill out this form. Or you can contact the school office by phone or email.
 

15. How do I pay for my child's lunch.

You can add funds in your FACTS family account.

16. Fingerprinting/Volunteer class requirements    
For our children’s protection, the Archdiocese of Washington requires that all volunteers (as well as school employees) be fingerprinted and pass a criminal background investigation before having any contact with children in the school. This includes parents who wish to accompany children on field trips as well as those who serve as volunteer teachers, coaches or club leaders. Volunteers must also attend a “Protecting God’s Children for Adults” educational workshop.  To learn about scheduled times for the workshop and to find out about fingerprinting please visit https://www.virtus.org for more information.

. If my spouse and I both do BINGO on the same night does it count as two BINGO credits?  
No.  Families are required to work 4 bingos this year. 
 

18. What opportunities are there for tuition assistance at St. John’s School?
Tuition assistance for St. John’s School families is available from resources provided by the Archdiocese of Washington (ADW), the Benjamin Thomas Combs Fund, the M.I.L. Family Foundation, and the Monsignor Harris Scholarship Fund. The tuition assistance and scholarships are available on an annual basis to families who have a financial need. Parents are required to complete a Financial Aid Application in order to qualify for the ADW Tuition Assistance program or either of the two Scholarship Funds. 

Adjudication of the individual familial award amounts is determined by the pastor and the principal, regardless of the tuition assistance/scholarship source.

19. How will I know what is going on at school?
The two best places for information are the School Bulletin and the School Google Calendar. Each Wednesday the St. John’s School Newsletter/bulletin is emailed to parents and includes upcoming events, helpful reminders and changes in schedule.  Be on the lookout for the newsletter/bulletin!
