SAB:  School Advisory Board

The primary function of the advisory board is to provide advice and assistance to the pastor-principal leadership team.

Purpose

The concept of the school advisory board is based on a belief in the importance and power of shared leadership.  Parents, faculty, administration, and the community work together to provide advice regarding school policies in accordance with the mission of the school and the policies of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington.

The primary function of the advisory board is to provide advice and assistance to the pastor-principal leadership team.

Advisory board members offer their experience and expertise to strengthen the decision-making process.  This assistance is provided through the function of committees.  It is through the work of such advisory board committees that recommendations are made, direction is set, and policy is developed.

Executive Committee

  • Chair: Will Tyson

  • Description:

    • Supports the Pastor-Principal leadership team on an ad hoc basis to work through issues or questions that require immediate attention.

    • Provides oversight and support to standing and ad hoc committees.

    • Facilitates regular / recurring meetings of the School Advisory Board. 

Finance Committee

  • Chair: Warren Maloney

  • Charter:

    • Plans for the long-term financial stability and growth of the school.

    • Reviews the annual school budget with the Principal. 

    • Assists the HSA in the creation and projection of fundraising activities. 

    • Supports the enhancement of school efficacy, capacity, and capabilities through identification and pursuit of grant opportunities.

Communications Committee

  • Chair: vacant

  • Charter:

    • Provides guidance on effective communication strategies.

    • Identifies, develops, and maintains communications pathways.

    • Advises on communication between SAB committees and parent community.

    • Provides support on communications-related tasking. 

    • Leads marketing initiatives with the parish, alumni, and broader Southern Maryland communities.

Facilities Committee

  • Chair: Ed Chermansky

  • Charter:

    • Works with SJS Facilities Manager to identify and prioritize facility needs (e.g., maintenance, upgrades, physical security, etc.)

    • Develops strategic plans to maintain and improve facilities.

Technology Committee

  • Chair: Ed Williams

  • Charter:

  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive IT plan that outlines existing capabilities, identifies new IT capabilities, and creates maintenance / upgrade schedules.

  • Identifies expansion projects and future needs through research and the solicitation of input from SJS staff. 

  • Develops a teacher training plan to enable all teachers to maximize their classroom IT capabilities.

  • Identifies and leverages grants to supplement IT maintenance and upgrades.
